NFL Week Four Preview by Hunter Williams

As most teams reach the quarter mark of their season this week, we take a look at the 4 best bets on the board at Sportsbook.com for week 4:

·  Cardinals (+7) at Falcons

Fresh off a disappointing Monday night game against the Saints, Michael Vick and the Falcons look to get back on track at home when the struggling Cardinals come to town.  The Falcons still are 1st in the NFL in yards rushing per game with 225.  Vick hasn’t had much of a reason to throw given the success his team has had on the ground.  While we don’t see that philosophy changing for this game, we do see them passing a bit more, as the Cardinals are one of the weakest pass defenses in the NFL right now.  Rumors of Kurt Warner's demotion were premature early this week as head coach Dennis Green announced Warner is still the starter.  The Cardinals would like to stick with a balanced offense but might find that difficult going up against a tough rush defense from Atlanta.  If Warner can bounce back from last weeks game he could have success against an Atlanta pass defense that is decent but not outstanding.  We fully expect the Falcons to take control of this one early and their defense to disrupt Warner and force errors in his judgment.  Look for the Falcons to bounce back at home and cover the –7.

PICK:  Falcons

·  49ers (+7) at Chiefs

Larry Johnson responded to being asked to carry the load while Trent Green is sidelined last week by posting 167 combined yards.  The 49ers were blasted by the Eagles' running backs last week and are averaging 117.3 rushing yards allowed per week.  Look for that average to go up this week as they face one of the leagues premier running backs in Johnson.  Even if the Chiefs feel like throwing the ball they could easily succeed with that as well as the 49ers are not very good at defending the pass.  Frank Gore is expected to play vs. the Chiefs this week with bruised ribs.  The 49ers should be able to run the ball effectively against a Chiefs rush defense that gives up yards in chunks.  This may be their only hope as Alex Smith will have a tough go at it against a Chiefs pass defense that is 3rd in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game.  While the 49ers are a much-improved team over last year, they still lack the experience to go into a hostile Arrowhead stadium and expect to do well.  It will not matter much that Trent Green is still out with his injury as the Chiefs should easily roll over the 49ers at home covering the –7.

PICK:  Chiefs

 ·  Colts (-9) at Jets

This week, the Colts face the Jets' 27th ranked pass defense, a team that averages 253 passing yards allowed per game.  Enter Manning and the Colts who don’t care if your pass defense is tough or week.  They simply pass all over everybody.  The Jets are a team that gave up 328 yards passing to J.P. Losman so Manning must be licking his chops at the thought of this match-up.  On top of that the Jets rush defense gave up 169 yards to the Bills last week making their defense an overall poor unit.  The Colts gave up 191 yards to the Jaguars' stable of running backs last week.  So look for the Jets to use the same tactic this week with whomever they line up at running back.  Chad Pennington came back down to earth last week, tossing for a mediocre 183 yards.  In order to keep this game close he will need to get back on track as the Colts will likely come out passing, forcing Pennington to try to keep pace.  We think the Jets are getting too much respect for beating the teams they have beaten thus far.  Look for the Colts to prove this point covering the –9 this week on the road.

PICK:  Colts

·  Patriots (+6) at Bengals

Last week, the Patriots made struggling Jake Plummer look pretty good and their pass defense is struggling right now.  With T.J. Houshmandzadeh obviously at full strength after last weeks performance, look for the Bengals passing game to excel.  Now if they could only get a banged up Chad Johnson going they could be even scarier than they have already been.  After a tough game that didn’t heed much against the Steelers last week, look for Rudi Johnson to get back to form against a Patriots defense that is regressing.  Look for the Bengal's defense to continue their ways and put a lot of pressure on Tom Brady.  Brady should be able to move the ball but the slightest mistake could result in disaster against the ball-hawking Bengals.  Cincy’s weakness right now is their rush defense as they are depleted due to injuries and suspensions.  The Patriots hope to get more going on the ground than last week when the Broncos shut them down.  Add to that the question of whether Corey Dillon will play with the arm injury and you see it could be a long day for the Patriots on the road.  Our suggestion is getting in on this game while the line is only Bengals –6 making this the best bet on the board this week.

PICK:  Bengals
