NFL Week Three Preview by Hunter Williams

The New Orleans Saints Re-open the Superdome Tonight 13 Mmonths after Hurricane Katrina.  -- Will this emotionally charged homecoming propel them to an upset over the Falcons? Our friends at Sportsbook.com have the line at for the Falcons at -4, but which is the sharper bet?

Falcons (-3) at Saints

The Superdome host a matchup of NFC south division rivals tonight who are both 2-0.   In a 14-3 win over Tampa Bay last week, the Falcons rushed for a team-record 306 yards.  Warrick Dunn led Atlanta with 21 carries for 134 yards, while quarterback Michael Vick had 14 rushes for 127 yards.  The Saints think they can combat that with a rush defense that is currently 6th in the NFL averaging only 74.0 rushing yards allowed per game.  If forced to throw, Vick may be able to have success as the Saints gave up 340 yards and 3 TDs to Brett Favre last week in Green Bay.  Monday's contest will also mark the home debuts of quarterback Drew Brees and running back Reggie Bush.  The Falcons are 3rd in the NFL after 2 weeks allowing only 52.5 rushing yards per contest.  Bush and Deuce McAllister will find it very difficult to run against this stout rush defense.  Drew Brees continues to utilize his young corps of receivers and this may be his lifeline if the rushing game is shutdown.  However, don’t forget the Falcons have allowed 9 points in 2 games - the end zone is a long way away when you're facing Atlanta.  With the Saints playing with as much emotion as a team can possibly have, we don’t see them covering the line.

PICK: Falcons
